Answered question

How do I manage bandwidth speed of connected devices?

We have a 60mbps plan. My stepson is gaming all of the time. It seems he is eating up all of the bandwidth, both download and upload. How do I control how much of the 60mbps download and 10mbps upload he has access to? He is connected by Ethernet to the Fizz router.

Hi Robert

As others mention, the Fizz modem does not easily support this function.

If you wish, you can try as follows:

1. You can disable the ethernet ports on the modem
Logon http://192.168.0.1 (username: cusadmin and your wifi password)
Menu Advanced >> Switch Setup Control >> Disable the port(s) he is using and Save your Changes.

2. You would have to put your son's device(s) on the Guest WiFi network.
Menu Wireless >> Basic Settings >> Guest >> Enable (pick your SSID, and use a different password)

3. You can setup Airtime Fairness on the Fizz modem
Wireless >> ATF >> ATF Enable >> Enabled
SSID-based Airtime Allocation >> Configuration
Then Save your Changes

Of course, the other options are:
1. To use your own router (allowing for more parental controls)
2. Upgrade your plan to higher speed.

Here is what Fizz suggests as ideal speed when selecting your internet plan:

BTW with the 60 Mbps plan and one person gaming, there should be sufficient bandwidth for other devices to access the internet. It might be that he is using more than 1 device and/or he is also live streaming, watching movies, etc. You may want to have a discussion with him to reach a mutual agreement. Also if he is old enough, perhaps he can pay a portion of the internet bill.

Hi Robert,
Not 100% sure to size completly your question, but the 60/10 is the download/upload speed.
Fizz is always unlimeted data on their offer.

Have a nice day! :)

You cannot do this with the router provided by Fizz. Some more expansive models might be able to limit the bandwidth in a certain network. Some routers allow you to set up a separate network that you can set up to stop at a certain time.
In your case, assuming you are using the Fizz provided router, you can't really do anything.
However, as Alexandre mentioned you have unlimited internet. If you want higher speeds while your son is gaming, you will have to upgrade the plan.

I dont think you can manage that on the fizz router. But you can buy a router who do it. Manage priority and bandwidth per mac adress or IP (if you put static IP on your stepson device). But i dont have a specific model to suggest. Good shopping :)

Thanks to everyone for your input! I think I will get a different router with more parental controls... but I really like the idea of him paying part of the internet bill! :)
