Automatic best answer?

I've noticed that even when I don't select a best answer in a thread, one seems to automatically get chosen. What is the algorithm behind this? Does it get chosen based on the amount of likes? Most recent? Just randomly? Or something else?

A best answer is chosen by the moderators and the thread is closed after a couple of days if you didn't chose to do so.

Definitely not randomly.

Seriously though, yes it is likely not randomly. Provides a good database for new-comers with questions, and selecting a best answer makes it quicker and a lot easier to read in the future.

I am squarely in the "probably random by moderators" camp. I have seen the best answer chosen by them when people have called out how non-competitive their internet prices are and I doubt they would purposefully choose those as the best one.
