Answered question

Xiaomi Mi A1, is it working well?

I'm thinking joining Fizz with a Xiaomi Mi A1, is there someone using Fizz with it that can tell me if there are issues?
Thanks

According to GSMArena web site https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_a1_(mi_5x)-8776.php#in...
Your have to careful about the sub-model you are using, some of thgem are not compatibles with Fizz network.

More info here:
https://fizz.ca/en/faq/compatible-devices
For an LTE-compatible phone configured with LTE network preferences:

Calls: Your device must support HSPA 850 MHz or 1900 MHz frequencies
Mobile data: Your device must have dual-frequency support for 1700/2100 MHz (also called AWS or band IV)

Your phone can also support other frequencies that allow it to take advantage of the LTE network.

For a phone that only allows 3G or HSPA preferred:

Calls and / or mobile data: The phone must support the 1700/2100 MHz frequency (also called AWS)

Allright so if I understand correctly:

I can use calls/3g network on the HSDPA 1900 Mhz (which my phone supports)

As for LTE, my phone does not support 1700/2100, but it supports others listed here :

https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8776&idP...,*

How do I know if these frequencies will work or not?

Fizz doesn’t support LTE calls anyway for now so 3G call is enough

People on reddit seems to say it works fine for data but it shows as 4G and not LTE but still works well

Use this link to find out more about your specific phone frequencys, by entering in your IMEI #

https://www.imei.info/

At the very least you will know which sub model it is.

To find your phone's IMEI # dial *#06# on your phone's key pad.

According to the link that you provided https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8776&idP...,* internet will not work because band 4 (1700/2100) is required for data and it is not supported.

The Mi 5x you are referring to, could be the China version of that model. Russia, Vietnam, Hong Kong an Indonesia models are compatible according to this site https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_a1_(mi_5x)-8776.php#ru...

The only way you can be sure is by using the phone's EMEI #

If you don't have the phone yet and you're about to buy it then you should verify with the merchant to be sure.

@Xavier
If you used the phone's EMEI # to find out the frequencies your phone is using, then it's shows that it's fully compatible with Fizz!

Hey, I'm using the Mi A2, that one is fully compatible and so far I haven't had many issues at all. So I don't see why the A1 wouldn't be compatible.

The information I found (on gsmarena and willmyphonework.net) was telling the A1 wouldn't work with 1700/2100mhz...
Ultimately, https://www.imei.info/ got me the right info.

Actually, my Mi A1 works like a charm!

You have to manually setup the APN network (that is the tricky part). To reach the manual setting you need to :

  • Turn off the "Automatically selec network" in Settings/Network & Internet/Mobile Network/Advanced.
  • Go and "re-select" Fizz (it will be "Searching..." for a while).
  • Then, you will have to slide the screen up to see a new menu at the bottom called "Access Point Names"
  • Select "+" and have fun ;-)
