If you bought your phone from a Canadian provider after December 1, 2017, it is unlocked by default. Otherwise call the provider and they will give the unlock code for free.
You will need to enter when you put the Fizz SIM card in.

If you got a sim card from an other provider than yours. You can put in your phone and if you got acess to the cellular network Bravo your cellphone is not lock.6

Take note that if you have an Iphone, you will maybe need to format it when unlocked by your provider. I had to do it myself, the Fizz sim card wasn't recognized otherwise.0

Plug to other provider's sim card. If it works, it's unlocked. If not, it's locked. It's free to unlock though. It's the law after dec-1-20170

Normally, your grandson is your child's son. If you have an issue with that you need to contact Fizz directly. Only they can change it. 0

Here is a recent tutorial to address your question. I would agree with Rene regarding your date of purchase for the phone, but thanks to craigslist and eBay, you may have a phone that looks unlocked, yet may be still listed with a carrier in the US or Europe. Your best bet is to also check to make sure your IMEI is clear, links to follow. Hope that helped and make it a great day!
